The new Mercedes-Benz EQS electric car: luxury and power

Mercedes-Benz may not have been the first brand to take the lead in the automotive industry's new electric age, but it is still one of the leading brands that are already beginning to shape the future of this age. After several years of waiting and millions of tests to deliver a product at the level of the star brand, it is time to welcome the Mercedes-Benz EQS, the flagship of the EQ electric family.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS maintains the main lines of the concept that we knew years ago and lands its details with more subtle forms, but without losing that futuristic touch that so caught the eye with the idea. Moreover, they decided to show it in a two-tone configuration that contrasts its forms well for its presentation. There will also be variants with single body color.

Its front is sharp and broad with a closed grille but adorned with dozens of tiny stars, well-defined headlamps, and a daytime running light that complements the signature of LEDs all over the front center. It should be noted that its LED headlights can optionally carry the Digital Light system that will allow clear messages to be reflected on the ground for pedestrians or other drivers.

The sides let us see an extremely smooth silhouette and a "coupe" cut, although it has four doors. Part of these forms has to do with its aerodynamics since Mercedes claims that its aerodynamic drag coefficient is only 0.20 Cx, the lowest recorded in the history of production cars.

The rear part maintains LED skulls attached to the center by a light strip and a small spoiler that finishes off the silhouette. In photos, it could be seen of container size, but the reality is that it is larger than a common body Mercedes-Benz S-Class. This EQS measures 5.21 meters long by 1.92 m wide.

Mercedes-Benz is well known for giving way to the automotive world we have today, thanks to the work of its founders. Since then, they have always been in the fight to be the spearhead in the automotive industry. They have been responsible for creating dozens of elements that are now the norm in 99.9% of the cars in the world. Today their mission is to maintain that step, and they want to achieve it hand in hand with technology.

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz EQS is simply impressive, and the first thing that mesmerizes the eye is the gigantic infotainment system called Hyperscreen. It consists of a 56" glass that crosses the entire width of the dash and in which we can find three OLED screens of the highest definition with sizes of 12.3-inch for the digital instrument panel, 17.7-inch for the central screen and another 12.3-inch for the passenger multimedia screen.

As always, this entire system will be highly customizable; it will offer internet connection, navigation with augmented reality, and hundreds of information or entertainment options according to the needs of the driver or his companions. It should be noted that this gigantic screen is an option; as standard, it will have a traditional dashboard in which the central screen will be 12.8" and the digital instrument panel will keep its 12.3" in size.

This system is compatible with the most recent evolution of the MBUX, capable of understanding more complex voice commands to control elements such as heating, massage, navigation, smart home, reminders, and many more. Likewise, it is programmed to better learn the driver's routines and thus make more useful suggestions.

At the moment, Mercedes-Benz presented only two versions of the EQS, both with a bench in the rear to be able to carry a total of 5 passengers. However, knowing the brand, it is almost certain that later on, they will present new versions or at least options to configure it with individual seats in the rear. Unfortunately, Mercedes did not release the exact measurements of its cabin. Still, considering the benefits of a dedicated electric car platform, the space is probably better than that of an S-Class.

Being a flagship, Mercedes-Benz could not skimp on power. So the version that starts the lineup, Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+, will produce a total of 329 hp and 338 pound-feet of torque from an electric motor mounted on the rear axle - yes, rear-wheel-drive only in this case. It will be powered by a 107.8 kWh lithium-ion battery that, according to the brand, can contain up to 26% more energy than that of the EQC.

This model will have a weight of 2,480 kg, and despite this, it will be capable to do the 0-100 km / h in 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 210 km / h. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz declares that both models could obtain up to 770 km of autonomy with this battery, estimated in the WLTP cycle.

The most capable variant, Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic, will carry two motors, one per axle, and increase its total power to 516 hp 631 lb.-ft. Of torque. In addition, thanks to the second axle with traction and the vector torque, you will be capable to do the 0-100 km / h in 4.3 seconds even when on the scale its weight rises to 2,585 kg. The maximum allowed speed is limited to 210 km / h.

Both electric vehicles will have a steerable rear axle that can initially turn only 4.5º. Still, optionally there will be another rear axle that can turn up to 10º for even better mobility. It will have adaptive suspension as a standard. In assistance, it will kill the entire arsenal of the brand that allows you to activate semi-autonomous driving on the highway by maintaining or changing the lane, intelligently increasing or decreasing speed, and even taking action in advance if the navigation detects a traffic jam or a crash miles ahead.

The fast loading on a 200 kW charger will allow you to move from 10% to 80% capacity in just 30 minutes. The Mercedes-Benz EQS will begin sales towards the second half of this year; its prices are not yet revealed, but having a level of equipment, technology, power, and luxuries like those of an S-Class in an electric, ensures that it will not be cheap at all. Although we already have the EQC in Mexico, and the EQA is confirmed to arrive in a few months, we see good chances of seeing it land in our territory.
