With the new Opel Astra, Opel begins yet another revolutionary chapter: the House of Rüsselsheim has published the first images of the brand-new Opel Astra Electric. The Opel brand thus presents the first series-produced electric Opel Astra in the history of this best-selling compact, boasts decades of success, and was recently awarded the "Golden Steering Wheel 2022." But that's not all: Alongside the battery-electric 5-door version, the traditional German brand is also presenting the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric, the first electric station wagon from a German manufacturer.
"With the new battery-electric versions of the 5-door and station wagon, customers will have cars suitable for everyday use characterized by a lot of comforts and, above all, great pleasure driving with zero local emissions." This is what we mean when we talk about an intelligent "greenovation" of mobility," said Florian Huettl, CEO of Opel. "Our electrification offensive continues." "The new Opel Astra Electric represents an important milestone in our journey to become an all-electric brand in Europe."
In the future, Opel Astra buyers can choose from more drive options than any other model. Alongside highly efficient internal combustion engines, the Opel Astra and Opel Astra Sports Tourer are already available as plug-in hybrid electric versions, including the new top model, the Opel Astra GSe. And the range of engines will soon be completed by the battery-powered Opel Astra Electric, which will be available to order starting in spring 2023.
Driving pleasure and responsibility: exciting, suitable for everyday use, locally emission-free
The new Opel Astra Electric and Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric will electrify customers. Like all versions of the Opel Astra, they are distinguished by bold and clear design and reliable performance. The new Opel Astra Electric guarantees pure driving pleasure with zero local emissions. The electric motor generates 115 kW (156 hp) and an impressive 270 Newton meters of maximum torque—both available as soon as the accelerator is pressed, guaranteeing lightning-fast starts and convincing acceleration. While many other electric cars are limited to 150 km/h or 160 km/h, the new Opel Astra Electric has a top speed of 170 km/h. Based on their driving preferences, those behind the wheel of the Opel Astra Electric can choose between three modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport.
The energy is stored in the 54 kWh lithium-ion battery. The 102 battery cells are housed in 17 modules and enable the new Opel Astra Electric to travel up to 416 kilometers with zero local emissions, according to the WLTP cycle. The engineers paid great attention to the architecture's efficiency and ensured an exemplary range while compacting the battery. The new Opel Astra Electric consumes just 12.7 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometers, making it efficient, perfect for everyday use, and the ideal time-saving companion on longer journeys—in the 5-door or station wagon version (Sports Tourer). When the battery-electric Opel Astra needs to be recharged, a short "pit stop" at a charging station is all it takes. The battery in the Opel Astra Electric can be charged to 80 percent in around 30 minutes at a 100 kW direct current fast charging station. In addition, the electric Opel Astra is equipped as standard with an 11 kW three-phase onboard charger for connection to the home wallbox.
The batteries are positioned under the floor, an efficient solution that allows you to maintain space for passengers and the boot. Even with the rear seats in place, the Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric offers a boot volume of 516 liters; with the seats folded down, the capacity rises to 1,553 liters. Another advantage: the low battery position ensures the Opel Astra Electric and Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric have typical Opel safety and stability on the road.
The interior also ensures a particularly intense driving experience: the ergonomic active sports seats, available as an option in Alcantara, provide the driver and passengers of the Opel Astra Electric the highest level of comfort, as you have come to expect from Opel. The seats, certified by AGR's independent posture experts, offer excellent lateral stability and a wide range of manual and electric adjustments. In this way, the driver feels even more integrated into the vehicle and experiences a unique sensation behind the wheel.
The Pure Panel, the fully digital cockpit with two large 10-inch widescreens, transports the driver into modernity. The latest generation of the intuitive human-machine interface displays all key functions, such as battery charge level or range, while basic settings, such as climate control, can still be easily adjusted at the push of a button. The driver can keep his eyes on the road and traffic with the large E-HUD Head-Up Display and natural voice recognition system. Numerous driver assistance systems, from the accident warning with automatic emergency braking to the active lane-keeping system, the drowsiness detection system, the rear cross-traffic alert, and the semi-automatic lane change, are combined in the new Intelli-Drive 2.0 and further increase safety, as the segment-leading active Intelli-Lux LED Pixel Light headlights with a total of 168 LED elements.
The new Opel Astra Electric communicates a direct and dynamic driving sensation the first glance. The electric Opel Astra has a "bold and pure" design and is equipped with the Opel Vizor, the brand's new face, and a super sports front bumper available in any trim level. Another element that immediately strikes the beholder is the standard 18-inch alloy wheels with a diamond cut or all-black finish. Here too, the new Opel Astra Electric sends out a clear and unmistakable message: the compact Opel marks the beginning of a new chapter—exciting, electrifying, and, for the first time, fully electric. @via EV stories.
